Traditional Thai Massage
Traditional Thai massage is often performed while you are still fully clothed on a thin mat or futon mattress. During a Thai massage, the individual being massaged does not have to put forth any effort. Instead, the massage therapist manipulates the body, putting it into different positions in an effort to help the body relax and stretch. Thai massage is often referred to as yoga for the lazy because the massage therapist is the one that does the work.

Multiple studies have been conducted to determine whether Thai massage is an effective form of treatment for lower back pain, or back pain in general. This study concluded that individuals that use Thai massage therapy as a treatment for back pain experience immediate relief from symptoms related to both stress and tension. It was also determined that these individuals experienced an enhanced mood, less depression and, overall, less stress.
The belief behind Thai massage practices is that the body is comprised of many different energy lines. When the flow of energy is blocked on one of these energy lines, it causes tension, disease and pain. Thai massage works to unblock the energy lines.
Individuals receiving a Thai massage are typically instructed to wear loose but comfortable clothing. During the massage, the masseuse uses their entire body, including the feet, to contort the body into a variety of stretches and poses to loosen up specific areas of the body in a fashion that is similar to yoga. Because of this, Thai massage is often referred to as the lazy version of yoga because the masseuse does all of the work for you. Thai massage is more simplistic than many other forms of massage, and typically no oils or lotions are used. Thai massages are known for being extremely energizing.
